Considering updating your old heating system to a clean, trouble free gas furnace or boiler heating system? NOW is the best time to replace your old system or install a new high efficiency system while you are building your home. You will be saving money and helping the environment. Hayter Plumbing & Heating Ltd. carries both high and mid-efficient heating systems. Only in a few instances does it become a better choice to install a mid-efficient system compared to the benefits of a new high efficient heating system.

The difference between natural gas(NG)and propane(LP)gas furnaces and boilers is determined by availability. In urban areas natural gas is by far the dominant heating fuel. However, if there is no natural gas pipe line available to you, an alternative source of fuel would be propane.

Natural gas has heated most urban homes for decades and continues to be the dominant source of fuel for homes and businesses throughout Southwestern Ontario. Natural gas is economical, clean and efficient to burn, and is available from several providers piped to your home or business. Even though it is said to be in abundant supply, the cost of natural gas and propane will likely continue to rise over time. At Hayter's we cannot stress enough how important it is to consider the highest efficiency natural gas or propane furnace or boiler heating system available. The cost of installing a high efficient system verses a mid efficient system usually has a pay back of 2-5 years in both propane and natural gas.

Gas forced air furnaces are the most common means of heating and cooling homes throughout Ontario because of ease of installation and year round comfort. A common forced air duct system allows heated air from your furnace and cool air from central air conditioning to be transferred to every room of the house.

Gas boilers that operate on natural gas or propane are also available up to 98% efficient and can fit almost any new or existing application. A boiler can supply heat through forced air systems, cast iron and baseboard radiators, radiant floor heat, and heat your hot water for every day use.

Gas furnaces and boilers with an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating (AFUE)of 75% or less are quite common and can be lower than 60%. This means they only generate about $.60 worth of heat for every dollar's worth of gas used. Since 1992, all furnaces must be no less than 78% efficient and today many are over 92% or higher in efficiency.

Natural Gas and Propane Boilers

Boilers fueled by natural gas or propane have made a big comeback in today's modern lifestyle as the need for greater comfort, higher output demands, and more luxuries dominate new home and renovation projects. Commercial buildings have utilized boilers for years for their practicality, low operating costs, and comfort level. Replacement high efficiency natural gas and propane fired boilers allow you to adapt to existing water or steam piping systems with little or minor changes required. Operating costs for new boilers are substantially lower and they are much cleaner than older, outdated systems. Several heat delivery systems exist for boilers that are not available with forced air systems.

Gas boilers are manufactured by Burnham- America's boiler company. A well established long term company like Hayter Plumbing & Heating Ltd. must have a high quality, trouble free boiler lineup and there is no better manufacturer than Burnham. Natural gas and propane fired boilers from Burnham are made with over 125 years of manufacturing and engineering expertise. Revolution, the solid cast iron non-condensing boiler (used in replacement work where the heat emitter is cast iron radiators), can achieve an AFUE of 88%. Burnham is the only remaining manufacturer that can ensure top quality castings because of their own in-house foundry.

A condensing boiler runs at lower water temperatures than traditional cast iron sectional boilers and in most installations they can be mounted on the wall. These types of boilers are capable of efficiencies as high as 98%. The condensing boilers are more costly to buy but are starting to become more common which is lowering the purchase costs.

Natural Gas and Propane Wall Furnaces

Existing homes requiring heat not provided by a central heating system typically have wall gas furnaces installed. These units are found in different rooms throughout the home on outside walls. New construction allows for a duct or radiant heat system and wall furnaces are not commonly installed. There are many installation options available for wall gas furnaces. Cozy gas wall furnaces from Hayter Plumbing & Heating Ltd. are available in natural gas and propane- with or without standing pilot. Standing pilot allows the heating system to operate when the hydro is out.

Grants available in Ontario

The Canadian Government, through Natural Resources Canada (NRC), recognizes the need for more energy efficient homes and has introduced EnerGuide for Houses. NRC recommends all home owners to get an energy audit performed on their home by an independent auditor (typical costs are $300.00 and $150.00).

Once the information is taken on your home a recommendation will be made on energy saving options. The options are listed with their expected pay backs. You have 18 months to make improvements to your home before a second visit is required to determine the new efficiency of your home. Homes are eligible for a grant of up to $10,000.00, however, the average home can expect between $1750.00 - $4000.00 if the recommendations are followed. A large portion of the suggested improvements for most homes is a new heating system. The average home built prior to the 1980's with a 65% efficient heating system can reasonably expect to receive $600.00 - $1200.00 in grant funding (does not have to be paid back) if replaced with a 90% plus efficient furnace or boiler. This, in turn, saves the home owners money and benefits the environment.

Hayter Plumbing & Heating strongly recommends you have this energy audit performed if you are planning any energy saving renovation and are replacing your outdated heating system with a high efficiency one. Not only does the government allow you funds for improvements but your monthly heating bills can be lowered substantially.
